Hail Mary

What do Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson have in common? That’s right, with the football game on the line and time running out, they have each perfected the Hail Mary. They can throw a bomb half the length of the field, into the end zone for the game winning touchdown.

What does this have to do with you and why do you care? Maybe you don’t even like football and could give two hoots about the Superbowl. Fear not. My usage of the term “The Hail Mary” is to be used thusly; if it’s the end of the day and you haven’t had a chance to workout because of work obligations, travel, family events whatever, you still can throw a Hail Mary.

You should answer the question what could be your Hail Mary routine and keep it in your mind and write it out so you know what to do in a pinch.

Ask Not What Your Workout Can Do For You

“I am out of the habit,” one of my client laments.

“I know every workout right now is going to be painful, even yoga.”

If you are feeling unmotivated or even scared to get started up again, fear no more. Here is your plan: force yourself to go to a class or to the gym and decide that you can chill on a mat do some stretches and just relax. With low expectations, you can match your low motivation and at least start.

The gap between doing and not doing is like the Grand Canyon, unsurpassable. Once you unroll that mat, inevitably, you will get a decent workout.

Never ask if you feel like it. Nobody cares how you feel, your body needs to move, period.

Motivation is Dead

There is a reason the fitness industry is a 50-billion-dollar business. Americans want a change in their bodies, but fear they don’t have the motivation or discipline to get there on their own.  So like good consumers, they look to products to help them achieve the perfect self.  Most often, the diet or plan they pick only works temporarily or not at all and they move on to the next big thing.

Discipline is a mean word. It makes me feel like I got in trouble and am sitting in the principals office. Who wants to be disciplined? Not me. Is the disciplined person getting invited to a girl’s weekend, the lead singer in a punk band, or wind surfing in Australia?  The disciplined person sounds boring to me.

Great, you got your egg whites and your salad, but are you having sex? (Which can burn almost 100 calories, by the way.)

My whole life I have basically been able to eat what I want.  Though I profess healthy eating (and mainly eat fairly well), I also have eaten my share of junk, like fries, pastas and sugar.  I naturally have a pretty quick processing metabolism — (don’t hate) — and my workouts have improved that function, so I have always been able to get away with being less than perfect with my eating.

Until now.  The day has come that my body does not want to process things as quickly and my extra snacks have nowhere to go, but to store.  Okay, turn to fat.  I am okay with this and have decided it’s probably time for me to enter into the adult world and limit my intake of crap.  Cupcakes are for five-year-olds, seriously.

Make a commitment to workout every week!

I Get So Emotional, Baby

“My mother-in-law is coming into town.”

“I have a super stressed work week.”

“My kid vomited on my running shoes.”

Whatever excuse you come up with not to workout, needs to be tossed aside.

“But, Susan,” you plea, “I really do have a super packed work week and my dog did chew up my iPhone with my run keeper app.”

Over my last decade of training clients, I’ve trained people with various degrees of busy-ness. And with every one of them, I stress that they shouldn’t think about whether they want to or have time to workout. Just start moving for 20 to 60 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week and don’t stop committing to that.  My clients with the highest degree of consistency always get the best results.

Live with distinction. Make plans, make goals and complete them. If you don't push yourself, how will you ever succeed?

Distinction

On my desktop right now is a file entitled “Life with Distinction” and inside lists my goals for 2017. We are a sum of our habits — some are good, but some we’d like to kick. Living with precision doesn’t mean I am throwing the old me out the window to start over again, but merely being aware of my patterns and making decisions about what each day looks like.

One big change for me is going to be planning. If you are like me, you run from planning like the villain in a tangled Spiderman web in my son’s comic books. This doesn’t mean my days won’t be spontaneous, but even with random time, workouts, or meditation time I am going to block it off in my phone calendar.

Kids Counting Steps

“I don’t want to workout.”

“I am too tired.”

“My elbow feels swollen and besides I might be getting sick.”

These are all lies we tell ourselves to get out of something we really DO want to DO. WORKOUT.

Have you ever finished a workout and said, “Oh shit, I wish I hadn’t worked out.” No. You are always glad you did. You always feel better, it never fails you, not once. So why don’t you do it?

You fail yourself by believing your own stories about how it’s impossible to commit to a routine.

I was astounded when I saw a new product on the market, a pedometer for children. With mixed emotion I looked at it and wonder when did we get so backwards that our children are counting their steps.
